Students of Applied Computer Science with a specialization in Database Engineering took second place in the Data Science competition "Pump It Up: Data Mining the Water Table".
The team: Hubert Kłosowski, Paweł Saturczak, Andrzej Szlaski, Wojciech Tomicki and Miłosz Wojtaszczyk took part in the Data Science competition as part of the implementation of the "Summative Module". The topic concerned the problem of access to drinking water in African countries, and the task was to correctly identify the technical condition of water pumps located in Tanzania.
Our talented students won 2nd place out of 6,822 teams participating in the competition (as of July 3, 2024). The competition was particularly fierce as they have traded places multiple times over the past few months with the current leaders who represent St. Petersburg University. It is worth emphasizing that until May this year, the best result was dated August 2021, so for almost three years no team in the world has been able to achieve the result achieved by our students. And although the current leaders remain the team from Saint Petersburg, we have no doubt that it was the team from the FTIMS that motivated their rivals to even greater effort, which allowed them to regain 1st place.
The ranking of the best solutions can be found on the DrivenData.com platform. The competition remains open, so everyone can try their hand at it!
We are proud of our students whose Data Science projects reach the international arena and of our lecturers who, with their knowledge and commitment, make such successes possible!
