The 4th IISA World Championships in Głogów have come to a close. The three-day event saw exceptional efforts from all swimmers, with a world-class performance from our student Tomasz Józefiak, who took home the bronze medal.

Our physicists are working on an innovative optical water vapour analyser that will significantly reduce energy consumption and will be much cheaper than similar solutions currently available on the market. Research will be conducted jointly with scientists from Wrocław University of Science and Technology and the Technical University of Berlin. The project will be implemented by companies from Poland and Germany.

Dr inż. Krzysztof Guzek from the Institute of Information Technology has been honoured with Award of the Marshal of the Lodz Voivodeship in the Competition for the best dissertations and works thematically related to the Voivodeship of Lodz. The award-winning doctoral dissertation is titled ‘A generative dynamic visual identity system of Lodz University of Technology’.

A team of scientists headed by Prof. Tomasz Czyszanowski from the Institute of Physics described the discovery of a new phenomenon involving the increase of optical power emitted by Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) as a result of breaking their cylindrical symmetry. The latest issue of the world's leading academic journal Nature Photonics recognises the novelty and applicability of this discovery and dedicates to it an article from the News & Views series: "Asymmetry brings power boost".

During the XXIII Conference on Liquid Crystals, Chemistry, Physics and Applications, which was held in Karpacz on 18 – 22 October 2021, a graduate of Technical Physics, Michał Szmigielski, MSc, won the second prize in the competition organised by the Polish Liquid Crystal Society. The aim of the competition was to recognise exceptional MSc theses in the field of liquid crystals.

Research conducted by Professor Katarzyna Pernal from the Institute of Physics is highly regarded by the scientific community. Prof. Pernal was recently invited to write an article in the renowned NRC journal on advances in chemistry and computational physics. She is also nominated for the Heisig Prize known as the 'little Nobel'.
